The Echo Chamber of Validation: Why We Keep Asking the Same Question

There is a specific kind of exhaustion that comes from asking five different psychics the same question and getting five slightly different variations of "yes." You would think it would bring peace. Instead, it brings a frantic, buzzing anxiety. Because deep down, beneath the desire for a happy ending, you know that you are shopping for an answer rather than listening for one.

I call this the Validation Loop. It happens when we are so terrified of a negative outcome that we unconsciously filter out any information that contradicts our hope. We become directors of our own play, casting the psychics as actors who are only allowed to read from the approved script. If one of them goes off-book and suggests that maybe, just maybe, he isn't coming back, we dismiss them. "They didn't connect," we say. "They were off today."

This is not to say that psychics are always right or that you should blindly accept bad news. But when you find yourself rejecting every reading that doesn't align with your fantasy, you have entered an echo chamber. You are no longer seeking guidance; you are seeking an accomplice. You want someone to help you hold up the heavy, crumbling walls of a reality that doesn't exist.

The danger of the echo chamber is that it keeps you frozen. As long as you can find one person to tell you that the breakthrough is "just around the corner," you don't have to do the hard work of moving on. You don't have to grieve. You don't have to rebuild. You can stay in the comfortable, suspended animation of "soon."

Breaking this cycle requires a brutal kind of courage. It means asking a question and being willing to hear "no." It means sitting with the disappointment instead of rushing to the next advisor to fix it. It means recognizing that the most loving thing the universe can do is sometimes to slam a door in your face so you stop standing in the draft.

If you are ready to step out of the hall of mirrors, start by looking at your bank account. Look at your search history. Look at the cost of your clarity. If it's costing you your peace of mind, it's too expensive.
